Night in Berlin is electric. A transformation unfolds not just in the shift from day to night, but in the way the city breathes and adorns itself in darkness. The night in Berlin unlocks a freedom to explore one’s self. To wander its streets is to feel the city’s pulse intensify; there’s always something happening just around the corner.
After Dark features over 50 analog photographs that capture various facets of Berlin's nightlife, drawn from personal experiences living in the city. Through a blend of street photography and portraits taken on 35 mm film, the work delves into the particular elements of the Berlin night, exploring what makes it distinct from other cities. From Späti scenes of young Berliners to graffitied Kneipe toilets and intimate apartment gatherings, each photograph reveals Berlin’s continuous affirmation of freedom and its invitation to explore what freedom means for oneself here. After Dark is a deeply personal project that seeks to weave the subjective experience of the night with the broader cultural landscape that gives Berlin nightlife its magical quality.
After Dark employs techniques of flash and overexposure, spotlighting subjects and illuminating moments that typically only exist in darkness, allowing viewers to fully absorb these ephemeral experiences. In a few cases, underexposure is utilized, resulting in grainier, more intimate textures or flickers of light. Amidst the enveloping darkness, flickers of light emerge, revealing the hidden stories and vibrant energy of the city.
Beyond simply documenting Berlin’s nightlife, the exhibition serves as a testament of love for the city and a wish to share this infatuation with others, inviting viewers to see their own experiences of Berlin reflected in the work.
